TC History

   How TRANS Centre Started...

Bedok Outreach Project was started in 1978 by a group of people who shared a common vision of helping young people in Bedok South. With this, the seed for the future of TRANS Centre (TC) was sown.

" Mats were laid at the void deck as there was no office then." - Mr Yeow Shih Shin, Chairman from 1987 to 1995
and 1996 to 1997, pioneer volunteer

   TRANS Centre's Milestones

Early 1980s
TC, then known as "Temasek Centre" was coined to replace the name "Bedok Outreach Project". TC had its very first own office - a place called home. It remained a place for youths and children to drop-in for recreation as well as a study centre for some of them.

   1987

"TRANS Centre" was registered with the Registry of Societies, with "TRANS" being the acronym for
Temasek Reachout and Neighbourhood Services.

   1988 - 1990

This was a period where TC reached an important stage of growth when future directions, goals and objectives of the organisation were reviewed. At this point, there was growing recognition that working with the families beyond the needs of children and youths was important.

This was also a time where TC built on its strength of providing training for staff and volunteers for greater effectiveness in their work with clients.

Many programmes were further developed, one of them being the Children Drop-In.

" TC is the place where I grew up. Together with staff, volunteers, children and youths but all in all they are family! " - Mr Kelvin Lim, volunteer since 1992

   1991

Premature School Leavers Programme was launched.

   1992-93

TC built on its strength in running interest groups.

   1994

At this point, TC was bursting at the seams. There was hardly any space to conduct counselling in privacy, and volunteers were jostling for space during evening meetings.

10 April 1994 : TRANS Centre Walkathon
TC was re-organised into a Family Service Centre. A TC Fund-Raising-cum-Walkathon was organised to the theme of "With Each Step We Care" to raise funds for TC's expansion.

   1995-99

November 1995 marked the official opening of TRANS Centre at its new premises - Blk 411, Bedok North Ave 2. The new Centre was a dream come true. With its new opening, TC expanded into a full-fledged FSC with 11 staff.
